A sure way to gather intel and ideas for recording
and mixing, is to take a seat at local live events and performances. Chicago has some lively blues club venues and jazz venues that are world class. The Jazz Showcase, Buddy Guy's Blues, and quite a few other popular locations will make the trip memorable. As a sound engineer, all you need to do is sit back, listen, observe, and enjoy. Shaking a few hands and talking with the sound producers as well as the performers is highly recommended. It is a great way to network and to build a working knowledge of the countless combinations of tools, equipment, and methods for getting the right sound, in the right place, and at the right time.
The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events is a good place to start. This weekend the Chicago Gospel Fest is on the list of events, and
next week the Chicago Blues Fest is being held in Millennium Park. If you are not a resident of the Chicago area, websites like Eventbrite.com and
the various official city websites will keep you up
to date and informed about upcoming events.
